Wat is er ontstaan?

Wat is er in de afgelopen week allemaal ontstaan tijdens het werken in het Burgerweeshuis Zierikzee? Ik begon met ‘torens bouwen’ op drie grote panelen van 50 x 150 centimeter. Dat zijn de drie collages op de eerste foto; alledrie nog niet af, maar wel lekker op weg. Daarna ging ik verder op drie panelen van 90 x 50 cm, ook met allerlei druksels van objecten die ik had gevonden in o.a. kringloopwinkels. Tijdens het expositie-weekend werkte ik aan drie totaal andere panelen. Die laat ik morgen zien!

What originated during my residency in Burgerweeshuis Zierikzee? I started ‘building towers’ on three large panels of 50 x 150 cm. Those are the three collages on the first picture; not finished, but a good start. Then I continued on three panels of 90 x 50 cm, also with prints of objects I had found in thrift stores. During the exhibition weekend I worked on three totally different panels. Those I will show tomorrow!

Critters

Deze week heb ik nog een poosje doorgewerkt aan een paneel waarmee ik twee weken geleden begonnen was en dit is eruit gekomen. Ik noem het ‘Critters’; collage en acrylverf op mdf paneel, formaat 50 x 50 cm.

This week I worked some more on a panel that I started on two weeks ago and this is how it looks now. I named it ‘Critters’ and it is a combination of collage and acrylic paint on mdf panel, size 50 x 50 cm.

Drakennest

‘Vogels leggen hun eieren in mei, draken doen dat in juni’, aldus muzikant Wouter Kuyper van het duo Wouter en de draak. Zij werken hard aan een nieuwe cd, waarvan nu in ieder geval de eerste single al online te beluisteren is op o.a. Spotify via deze link. En ik mocht de illustratie erbij maken!

Lekker gek

Lekker aan het spelen met stukjes rest-karton op een geschilderde achtergrond en opeens ligt er dit. Gek genoeg om zo vast te plakken, denk ik!

Thuis

Van 21 april t/m 17 mei zal in het SCHUNCK Museum (Glaspaleis) in Heerlen de tentoonstelling Passaasj Parkstad te zien zijn. Iedereen die zich kunstenaar of ontwerper voelt, en in de regio woont, kon zich via een open call inschrijven met een kunstwerk dat past in het thema ‘Thuis’. Uit meer dan 475 inzendingen zijn vervolgens 100 werken gekozen, die te zien zijn in deze tentoonstelling. Onderstaand werk van mij is een van de geselecteerde werken. Het SCHUNCK Museum is geopend van dinsdag t/m zondag van 11 tot 17 uur. Het adres is Bongerd 18 in Heerlen.

 

‘Love me’

Soms lijken kunstwerken een compleet eigen wil te hebben. Hoe hard ik ook probeerde om onderstaand werk een andere richting op te krijgen, dit is duidelijk wat het wilde zijn. En het liet me ook al snel weten hoe het moest heten: ‘Love me’. Dat moet ik dan maar accepteren, en ervan houden. Ik ga het nu liefdevol vernissen.

Sometimes it seems like works of art have a mind of their own. No matter how hard I tried to push this work in a different direction, this was obviously what it wanted to be. It even let me know how I should call it: ‘Love me’. So I have no choice but to accept this, and love it. I'm going to varnish it lovingly now.

Te koop

Dit werk is nu helemaal af, gevernist, ingelijst, én: te koop! Het is een collage, gecombineerd met acrylverf op 9 mm dik mdf, formaat 80 x 40 cm in een grijze mdf wissellijst. Prijs: 475 euro (exclusief verzending). Titel: ‘Rewind’.

Elfland cd

De cd ‘Elfland’ van Leslie Fish gaat nu waarschijnlijk snel verschijnen! Deze week kwam in elk geval de titelsong al online, en de volledige cd zal dit voorjaar uitkomen. Omdat de uitgever Prometheus Music hem nu zelf al op zijn website heeft aangekondigd, kan ik mijn cover-illustratie nu ook hier laten zien. De titel is gekalligrafeerd door Ans Hameleers. Elfland

Er is al een tijdje een nieuwe cd van Leslie Fish in de maak, maar nu komt er alvast een single online van de titelsong. ‘Elfland’ werd in 1999 geschreven door Leslie Fish. Hieronder vind je de songtekst en het beeld dat ik daarbij maakte. De uitgave is van Prometheus Music en de kalligrafie werd verzorgd door Ans Hameleers van het Atelier voor Kalligrafie in Sittard.

A new Leslie Fish CD has been in the making for a while now, but the title song will be released seperately on streaming platforms as an advance single. Written by Leslie Fish in 1999 and now released by Prometheus Music. The calligraphy was done by Ans Hameleers, rest of the artwork by me.

Torens bouwen

In een kringloopwinkel kreeg ik een aluminium wissellijst gratis, omdat het glas was gebroken. Maar de lijst had zo'n ongebruikelijk formaat (ongeveer 46 x 143 cm) dat ik het zonde vond om hem weg te gooien. Dit extreme formaat inspireerde mij meteen om er een passend kunstwerk voor te maken. Oorspronkelijk bevatte de wissellijst een horizontaal zeegezicht, maar ik besloot het formaat in verticale richting te gebruiken want ik had opeens zin om torens te bouwen. Wel nog steeds tweedimensionaal hoor! Deze toren wordt gebouwd van stukken papier en karton: opengevouwen doosjes en allerlei druksels. Dit zijn de eerste stappen.

In a secondhand shop I got an aluminium picture frame for free because the glass was broken. But the frame had such an unusual size (about 46 x 143 cm) that I thought it would be a waste to throw it away. The extreme format of the frame inspired me to make a fitting work of art for it. Originally, the frame contained a horizontal seascape, but I decided to use it in a vertical way because I suddenly had the urge to build towers. Still two dimensional, of course! This tower will be built from pieces of paper and cardboard: old boxes folded open and all kinds of print experiments. These are the first stages.

Showtime

Nog zo'n paneel dat minstens even lang ‘onder handen’ was als dat van gisteren. Ook hier heb ik steeds bij beetjes aan gewerkt, tot ik weer niet wist hoe ik verder moest. Het heeft al heel wat ‘gezichten’ gehad, maar nu wordt het tijd om het te laten zien: ‘Showtime’, acryl en collage op mdf paneel, 80 x 80 cm.

Another work that took at least as long as the previous one to finish. I worked on it by bits, every now and then. It has had quite a few appearances, but now the time has come to show its final version: ‘Showtime’, acrylics and collage on board, 80 x 80 centimetres.

Onderwaterlandschap

In het weekend lekker creatief bezig geweest voor mezelf: gespeeld met een combinatie van materiaaldruk/monoprint (afdrukken van planten) en sjabloondruk (de vissen). Het resultaat was dit woeste onderwaterlandschap.

In the weekend I did some creative playing for myself: this is a combination of monoprint (plants) and stencils (the fish). The result was this wild underwater landscape.

Abstracter

Vrouwen met accordeons zijn er ook! In deze collage-reeks kwamen ze er wel iets abstracter uit te zien dan de mannetjes.

In this collage series the women with accordions turned out a bit more abstract than the men.

Tekening over collage

Vorige maand maakte ik enkele snelle collages met restjes papier in mijn schetsboeken. Nu heb ik een tekening/aquarel gemaakt over een van die collages. Of het er beter op is geworden weet ik niet, maar daar gaat het ook eigenlijk niet om. Het was in elk geval leuk om te doen en het is ook fijn om te werken op een blad dat niet helemaal maagdelijk wit is.

Last month I made some quick collages with scraps of paper in my sketchbooks. Now I made a drawing over one of those. I'm not sure if this was an improvement of the image, but that actually wasn't the point. It was fun to do and it helps when a page is not totally blank to begin with.

Stempelworkshop

Gisteren gaf ik een workshop stempels maken. Er werd flink geëxperimenteerd met allerlei technieken en aan het eind van de middag was iedereen verbaasd over wat er allemaal was ontstaan. Vooral de ‘per ongelukjes’ blijken meestal het leukst uit te pakken.

Yesterday I gave a stamp making workshop where everyone experimented a lot and some surprising results emerged. Especially the things that you didn't plan or expect usually turn out to be the most fun.
