Roadtrip

Dit is het laatste werk in de serie ‘Kunst langs de kust’. De afbeelding op dit paneeltje is niet in één specifieke plaats ontstaan, maar begon in Katwijk aan het begin van mijn trip en veranderde vervolgens gedurende de hele reis continu omdat ik maar steeds niet tevreden was. Uiteindelijk heb ik het thuis afgemaakt en dit is hem nu. ‘Roadtrip’ vond ik een passende titel voor deze.

This is the last work in the ‘Art along the Coast’ series. The image on this small panel didn't originate in one specific location, but started at the beginning of my trip and kept changing during my journey because I couldn't get it right. In the end I finished it at home and this is what it looks like now. I thought ‘Roadtrip’ would be a fitting title for this one.

Te braaf of te druk?

Het moeilijkste aan (abstracte) kunst vind ik: wanneer stop je? Hieronder twee panelen in bewerking. Het bovenste vind ik al best oké, maar nog wat te braaf/kaal. Maar als ik ermee verder ga, loop ik het risico dat ik de kracht van de compositie teniet doe. Het onderste paneel was in eerste instantie ook best oké, maar daarop ben ik dus te ver gegaan. Komt vast allebei goed, maar ik weet nog niet wanneer en hoe...

The most difficult part of making (abstract) art for me is: when to stop? Below are two panels in progress. The top one is kind of alright, but still a bit boring maybe. But if I continue working on it, I could possibly ruin it. The bottom one was kind of alright too, but on this one I really went too far. They will eventually both work out fine, I just don't know yet how and when...

Kust-kunst deel 7

Het laatste deel van mijn reis langs de Noordzeekust ging door West-Vlaanderen, van Knokke-Heist naar Koksijde. Er ontstonden vier collages op paneeltjes, niet in één specifieke plaats, maar al gaandeweg op reis. Terug in mijn atelier thuis maakte ik ze verder af.

The last part of my trip along the North Sea coast went through West Flanders, from Knokke-Heist to Koksijde. Four collages on small panels were the result. They didn't come about in one specific place, but during several days along the way. Back home in my studio I added the final touches.

Kust-kunst deel 6

In Westkapelle waaide het zo hard dat ik mijn schetsboek, potloden en aquarelpaletje stevig moest vasthouden tijdens het maken van een razendsnel schetsje, dat later als inspiratiebron diende voor opnieuw een paneel met een collage van verzameld papier en karton. Met name de kleur oranje, die in de skyline van Westkapelle volop aanwezig was, moest in deze collage een belangrijke rol krijgen!

In Westkapelle the wind was so strong I had to hold on firmly to my sketchbook, pencils and watercolor palet while speedsketching the skyline. Later I used this super fast sketch as a reference for another collage with collected pieces of paper and cardboard. The color orange needed to be very prominent in this one!

Kust-kunst deel 5

Intussen is mijn ‘Kust-Kunst’ serie aanbeland in Zeeland. In Zierikzee, om precies te zijn, waar ik een week mocht werken in het atelier van het Burgerweeshuis. Soms komt inspiratie van iets heel alledaags. In dit geval was dat het ‘plakbord’ in de haven, of eigenlijk juist de plekken op dat plakbord waar niets hing, maar waar nog wel restanten te zien waren van wat daar ooit gehangen moest hebben. Op mijn paneel probeerde ik die sfeer na te bootsen met snippers van tijdens mijn reis verzamelde papiertjes.

Meanwhile my ‘Coast Art’ series landed in Zierikzee, where I worked in the studio of the Burgerweeshuis for a week. Sometimes inspiration comes from something commonplace, like in this case the notice board in the harbor. Or, to be precise, from the parts of this board where there were no flyers or cards, only the remains of what once had been there. On my panel I tried to imitate this with collected snippets of paper from my trip.

Meer met sjablonen

Ik heb mijn sjablonen ook losgelaten op een paar panelen die ik al voor mijn reis langs de kust had voorbereid. Toen heb ik er twee thuisgelaten, omdat ik twijfelde of ze misschien al af genoeg waren, maar nu ben ik er dus toch mee verdergegaan. De bovenste is klaar, denk ik. De onderste heeft nog iets nodig.

I also used my stencils on a couple of panels that I had already prepared before my trip along the coast. Then, I decided to leave two of them at home, because they could possibly be finished already. Now, I continued working on them anyway. The top one is done, I think. The bottom one still needs something.

Spelen met sjablonen

Hier onderbreek ik de ‘Kust-Kunst’ serie even want ik kon het natuurlijk weer niet laten om nog even met mijn sjablonen te gaan spelen. Binnen de kortste tijd lag de hele vloer van mijn atelier vol! Een fijn zootje.

Here I'm taking a small break in the showing of the ‘Coast Art Series’ because I couldn't resist playing with my stencils again. In no time my whole studio floor was covered! A happy mess.
