Schatzoeken

Soms is een eerste begin al meteen veelbelovend, maar eigenlijk vind ik dat over het algemeen een nadeel: ik durf dan niet goed verder uit angst om het te verpesten. Het paneel hieronder vond ik na de eerste schildersessie al meteen leuk, maar hoe nu verder? Ik deed nog een tweede poging en daarna stond het werk maandenlang onaangeraakt en onaf in mijn atelier. Uiteindelijk heb ik er maar een paar kleine dingen aan gedaan: een beetje extra kleur, wat collage-elementen en een maan in de linkerbovenhoek. Nu ben ik voorlopig tevreden. De werktitel hiervoor was ‘Schatzoeken’. Grote kans dat het dat blijft. Collage en acrylverf op mdf paneel, 60 x 60 centimeter.

Sometimes a painting immediately starts out promising, but in a way this is a disadvantage, I think: when something looks good from the start, it gets harder to move on. I don't want to spoil a good beginning. So what to do? Below you see a panel that I thought started out nice, then I worked on it some more (second image) and after that it ended up sitting around in my studio for months untouched and infinished. Eventually I added some small things: a bit of extra paint, some collage elements, and a moon in the upper left-hand corner. I'm happy with it for now. The title that comes to mind is ‘Treasure Hunt’ and it might stay that. Collage and acrylics on mdf panel, 60 x 60 cm.

Beperkt kleurenpalet

Een reeks portretten met een beperkt kleurenpalet:
hierin gebruikte ik alleen rood, blauw en zwart kleurpotlood.

Hope Eyrie

Een tweede single van de binnenkort te verschijnen cd ‘Elfland’ van Leslie Fish staat sinds gisteren online: ‘Hope Eyrie’. Dit lied is in 1975 geschreven door Leslie Fish, over de Apollo 11 missie en de maanlanding. Saillant detail: het lettertype dat ik gebruikte voor de titel – Futura – was blijkbaar (zonder dat ik dat eerst wist) veelvuldig gebruikt in de Apollo 11 missie en staat zelfs op de officiële maan-plaquette.

A second single from the soon to be released album ‘Elfland’ by Leslie Fish is published on online streaming platforms since yesterday: ‘Hope Eyrie’. This song was written in 1975 by Leslie Fish, about the Apollo 11 mission and the landing on the Moon. Fun fact: the font that I used for the title – Futura – was apparently used as the main typeface in the Apollo 11 mission and is even featured on the lunar plaque.

Hergebruik

Behalve in oude boekhoudschriften, vind ik het over het algemeen wel prettig om te tekenen op ‘oud papier’, dus bijvoorbeeld op papieren zakjes van de bakker of de groenteboer, op opengevouwen kartonnen doosjes, in afgedankte boeken en op gebruikte papieren lunchzakjes. Soms maak ik daar mijn eigen schetsboeken van en soms gebruik ik ze voor losse tekeningen. Hieronder nog wat vakantie-impressies.

Besides in old accouting notebooks, I enjoy sketching on discarded paper and cardboard in general. For instance on paper bags from the bakery or the grocery shopping, on cardboard boxes that I fold open, in old books, and on paper lunch bags. Sometimes I bind these into my own sketchbooks, but I also use them for loose sketches. Here are some more holiday impressions.

Vakantie

Vorige week was ik een paar dagen op vakantie in noord Frankrijk en ik besloot om eens te gaan schetsen in de twee boekhoudschriften die ik een paar weken eerder op een rommelmarkt had gekocht. Nou is het tekenen van rechte lijnen niet bepaald mijn sterkste kant, maar de lijntjes in deze schriften hielpen wel wat om alle huisjes een beetje ordelijk neer te zetten. Bovendien vind ik het lijnenspel tussen mijn schetsen en de lijnen van het schrift wel wat hebben.

Last week I enjoyed a few days of vacation in the north of France and I decided to sketch in the two accounting notebooks that I had bought a couple of weeks earlier on a flea market. The drawing of straight lines is not something I do very well, but the lines in these books actually helped to sketch the houses. Also, I do like the way the lines of the drawing work together with the lines of the notebooks.

Milonga

Het was een drukke week waarin ik een paar mooie concerten mocht bijwonen. Deze schetsjes zijn van een milonga en concert op woensdagavond: duo El Revire (basgitaar, gitaar en zang) samen met bandoneonist Hugo Satorre in Luik.
