Welkom in mijn atelier!
Dit is intussen wat er is geworden van de paneeltjes met ‘achtergrondmuziek’ die ik van de week maakte. Het zijn kleine hardboard paneeltjes van ongeveer 25 x 20 cm. Waarschijnlijk ga ik ze te koop aanbieden tijdens de kunstmarkt op het trekzakfestival in Veldhoven op zondagmiddag 27 september.
This is what came of the small panels with music collages that I started this week. They will probably be for sale at the harmonica festival in Veldhoven in September.
Oké, ik heb niet álles mee naar huis genomen: een aantal zomerse werkjes op papier heb ik achtergelaten in het Burgerweeshuis voor de Kunstroute Zierikzee: zondag 2 augustus open van 13:00 - 17:00 uur. Hou de website van het Burgerweeshuis in de gaten als je interesse hebt, of ga er zondagmddag gewoon even kijken als je in de buurt bent. Het huis is zeker een bezoekje waard!
Alright, I did leave some smaller works behind at Burgerweeshuis Zierikzee for the Art Route next Sunday (open from 1 until 5 p.m.). If you are in the vicinity, the house is definitely worth a visit!
Met veel geduld ben ik allerlei ‘druksels’ aan het uitknippen om daarna weer te kunnen gebruiken in mijn grote collages op panelen. Dit zijn afdrukken van o.a. een aardappelstamper, fietsonderdelen, plastic bloempotjes, en de dop van een dikke marker.
With a lot of patience I'm cutting out these prints to use them later in my large collages. These are prints of a potato masher, bicycle parts, plastic flower pots, and the cap of a large felt marker.

Dit zijn een paar van de ‘druksels’ die ik heb gemaakt met dingen zoals ijsblokjes- en muffinvormen, een eierhouder (voor in de koelkast), ribbelkarton, bubbeltjesplastic en een spaghetti-maat.
These are a few of the ‘printsels’ that I made with things like icecube- and muffin-forms, an egg tray (to put in the refrigerator), cardboard, bubblewrap and a spaghetti measure.
Weer een stapje verder met mijn nieuwe panelen. Wat gebeurt er als ik er tissue papier op lijm? Wat als ik daar acrylverf overheen schraap? Wat als ik er karton-afdrukken overheen zet? Zo blijf ik zoeken totdat ik het gevoel heb dat het klaar is.
A new step working on my new panels. What happens if I glue tissue paper on them? What if I scrape acrylic paint on top of that? What if I print cardboard shapes over it? This is how I keep searching until I feel the work is where it needs to be.

Dit zijn de ‘drukwerk rasters’ waar ik nu mee bezig ben: afdrukken van noppenfolie en een stuk karton met ronde gaten erin (afdankertje uit de supermarkt).
These are the ‘printing grids’ I'm working with now: prints of bubble wrap and a piece of cardboard with round holes in it (from the rubbish pile in the supermarket).
Behalve met structuren, ben ik ook aan het experimenteren met kleuren. In dit geval met de vier basiskleuren die normaal gesproken gebruikt worden in full color drukwerk: geel, magenta, cyaan en zwart. Door het afdrukken van plastic noppenfolie, heeft dit ook wel iets weg van drukwerk met een extreem grof raster, zie ik nu.
Besides experiments with structures, I'm also experimenting with different color combinations. Here I worked with the four basic colors normally used in full color printing: yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. I made prints of bubblewrap and it does look a bit like print with extreme large grid points.

Nu nog vernissen en inlijsten en dan kan ik aan de volgende beginnen.

Now all I need to do is varnish and frame it before I can start on the next one.
Het effect van de ‘glazing’ van gisteren is zo subtiel dat je op de foto's het verschil met eerst bijna niet ziet, maar in het echt is het een groot verschil! Zo zien de twee panelen waarop ik dit heb toegepast er nu uit. Ik vind de kleuren veel coherenter geworden. Of de panelen daadwerkelijk ‘af’ zijn, dat weet ik nog steeds niet zeker. Maar ze komen wel heel dicht in de buurt.
The effect of the ‘glazing’ I did yesterday is so subtle that you can hardly see the difference on the photographs, but in real life the difference is substantial! The colors look much more coherent now. Still not sure if these two are actually finished, but they are coming close.
Op de drie nieuwe panelen waaraan ik gisteren ben begonnen, heb ik eerst de vormen wat verduidelijkt met wit en zwart. En toen ik ze alledrie naast elkaar zette om eens te bekijken, zag ik dat ze eigenlijk nu al een leuk drieluik vormen, hoewel dat oorspronkelijk helemaal niet de opzet was. Alleen vind ik op dit moment het wit nog te wit en het zwart te zwart, maar daar is uiteraard iets aan te doen!
On the three new panels that I started yesterday, I first made the shapes a bit more clear with only black and white. And when I put them all next te each other to have a look, I noticed that they go really well together as a triptych, although that was not the intention to begin with. The only thing is that I now find the whites too white and the blacks too black, but that is something that can absolutely be fixed!

Kunst is eigenlijk – voor mij tenminste – het zoeken naar oplossingen voor zelfgecreëerde problemen, merkte ik gisteren weer. Heerlijk! Daarom besloot ik er nog een drietal aan toe te voegen: ik lijmde de ‘toevalskunst’, die eerder ontstond op losse vellen papier, op drie mdf paneeltjes van 35 x 65 centimeter. En nu kijken wat hieruit verder wil ontstaan...
Art is – for me at least – about finding solutions for self-created problems. Wonderful! So I decided to add three more: I glued the ‘coincidental art’, that I made on paper earlier, on three mdf panels of 35 x 65 centimeters. Now let's see what wants to come out of these...
Het is intussen allang december natuurlijk, maar ik werk nog aan mijn schilderij ‘November Blues’ alias ‘Pretty Pink’. Het krassen met dikke kleurpotloden, wat ik eind vorige week deed met portretschetsen, beviel me wel, dus dat wilde ik ook eens op dit paneel proberen. Een schets die ik van de zomer maakte van bladeren, gemaakt met een combinatie van druktechnieken (sjabloondruk en monoprint met echte bladeren) en lijnen/krassen werd mijn inspiratiebron (je kunt de tekening die ik bedoel via deze link terugvinden). Hieronder enkele werkfoto's en details.
Of course we are well into December by now, but I'm still working on ‘November Blues’ AKA ‘Pretty Pink’. Working with thick colored pencils, like I did last week in the portrait session, really appealed to me, so that's what I wanted to try on this panel next. Here are some pictures and details of what it looks like now.
