‘Running Late’

‘Running Late’ leek mij een passende titel voor de eerste collage van mijn nieuwe reeks. Niet dat-ie ergens voor te laat is, maar dat was het eerste wat in mij opkwam toen ik het eindresultaat bekeek. Er komt nog meer! En het wordt allemaal lekker gek en vooral niet te serieus!

‘Running Late’ seemed like a fitting title for this first collage in my new series. Not that it's late for anything, that was just the first text that came to mind when I looked at the finished piece. And there is more to come! All kind of pleasantly crazy and very much not too serious!

Ondergronden

Twee verschillende ondergronden, bedoeld om collage-elementen overheen te plakken. Het is altijd moeilijk om te beslissen of ik het zo zal laten (want eigenlijk ook al best leuk) of ermee verder zal gaan zodat het uiteindelijk iets heel anders wordt. Formaat: 80x80 cm.

Two different underpaintings that are meant as a base for collage. It's always a difficult decision what to do next: leave them as they are now (because I actually do like them this way) or continue with the collage as planned and turn them into something completely different eventually? Size: 80x80 cm.

Serieus begin

Zo maak ik ondergronden van kleur met acrylverf op mijn gewitte mdf platen. Dit gaat de basis vormen voor de collages die ik ga maken met alle druksels en structuren die ik de afgelopen tijd heb verzameld: een serieus begin voor een nieuwe serie werk!

This is how I make backgrounds of color with acrylic paint. On these backgrounds I'm going to make collages with all the prints and structures that I've been collecting lately: a serious start for a new series of work!

Vaandel

Toch nog één vakantie-blogje, omdat ik het gewoon niet kan laten! Dit keer geen tekening of schets, maar het heeft wel iets met collage te maken: een klein assemblage project. 

Just one more little vacation blog, because I simply cannot resist! No drawing or sketch this time, but it does have something to do with collage: a tiny assemblage project.

De benodigde materialen waren simpel: een gevonden schelp,
een tandenstoker en een plakbandje van een verpakking.

Het kost wat geduld en geëxperimenteer met de juiste lijm...

Maar dan heb je ook wat!

Scheursels

Vóórdat ik naar Schotland ging, had ik ook al een aantal collages gemaakt van Schotse landschapjes. Dit keer met aquarellen op zwaar papier, die ik in stukjes had gescheurd om interessante structuren te krijgen. 

Before I went to Scotland, I had also already made some collages of Scottish landscapes. For these I used watercolors on heavy paper that I tore up to get interesting structures.

Digitale collage

Toen ik gisteren mijn foto's van Schotland aan het uitzoeken was om hier iets te kunnen plaatsen, zag ik de afwrijfsels die ik ter plekke had gemaakt van de rotsen met nieuwe ogen. Ik had die schets misschien moeten bewaren en moeten laten zoals hij was, of er de huisjes van Pittenweem nog met een lijntekening overheen kunnen zetten, denk ik nu. Maar op dat moment was het erg winderig en was er gewoon geen gelegenheid om alle velletjes papier netjes naast elkaar uit te spreiden om rustig te bekijken.

When I was going through my Scotland pictures yesterday to select something for this blog, I saw the rock rubbings that I made there with new eyes. Maybe I should have left this sketch like it was, or maybe I should have made a line drawing of the Pittenweem cottages on top of it while I was there. That's what I'm thinking now. But on location it was very windy and it just wasn't possible to lay out all the sketches to look at them properly.

Dus toen ik bezig was op locatie, met vetkrijt en aquarel en water en wind, gebruikte ik stukjes van de gemaakte schetsen om over de zwart-wit lijntekening te plakken (die bij nader inzien ook best leuk was op zich). Uiteindelijk veranderde de lijntekening in de collage die ik gisteren plaatste en verdwenen alle overgebleven papiersnippers weer terug in de oud-papierbak waar ik ze ook uit had gehaald.

So instead I used some parts of the rubbings and watercolor sketches as basic materials for collage, on top of the blind contour sketch that I had already made of the houses. So this sketch eventually changed into the collage that I posted yesterday and all the leftover scraps of paper went back into the paper bin where I had pulled them out of in the first place.

Gelukkig had ik de foto's nog en daarmee kon ik onderstaande digitale collage maken, gecombineerd met een foto van een mooie Schotse lucht!

Luckily I did still have these pictures and with those, combined with one of a nice Scottish sky, I could make the digital collage below!

 

Schotland

Tussendoor was ik ‘even’ in Schotland voor een bezoek aan vrienden en het opdoen van nóg meer inspiratie. Ik heb o.a. meegedaan aan de Plein Air Competition van het Pittenweem Arts Festival. Niet gewonnen hoor, maar daar ging het natuurlijk ook niet om! Hieronder een foto-impressie van die prachtige dag en mijn uiteindelijk ingeleverde werk.

In between all the activities, I also visited Scotland for a short while to be with friends and to find even more inspiration. I also participated in the Plein Air Competition during the Pittenweem Arts Festival. My submission was not chosen as the winner, but that was never the main goal, of course! It was a wonderful day. Below a picture impression.

De natuur hielp ook een ‘handje’ mee met zand, (veel!) wind, en een enkele regendruppel.
